Mexican rock

Rock and roll is a genre of African American music which became popular across the world beginning in the late 1950s. In Mexico, Spanish language covers of rock standards were the first records of the genre in that country. Soon, however, Mexican bands like Los Rebeldes del Rock and Los Locos del Ritmo arose. Rock, like in the States across the border, was a rebellion scene, and many Mexican rock stars became involved in the counterculture. The 1971 Festival y Ruedas de Avándaro was organized in Mexico City, and the performances grew so controversial that the government banned the entire field of rock and roll.

Few bands survived the prohibition; though the few that did, like Three Souls in My Mind , remained fairly popular. It took more than thirty years for the band to be lifted. When it did, a number of performers became internationally renowned, including Los Caifanes, Café Tacuba, Maná, and Maldita Vecindad .

In the 1980s, Mexico was home to a growing progressive rock scene. Iconoclasta 's Iconoclasta was the first major recording of the style. The band was followed by others, like Cast, 0.720 Aleacion (0.720 Aleacion ), Delirium (Delirium , 1985), Caja De Pandora (Caja De Pandora ) and Praxis (La Eternidad De Lo Efimero ). Some Mexican prog bands used elements of traditional Mexican folk music in their work.
