- Space Shuttle Challenger destroyed at launch on January 28.
- December 14 - 23: First non-stop flight around the planet without refueling - the Rutan Voyager, piloted by Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, on a distance of 26,366 statute miles (the FAI accredited distance is 40,212 km)

- 6, Frankfurt: The world's heaviest passenger, an 800 pound Austrian man, flies on Japan Airlines to Tokyo. The airline had to remove 16 seats from a Boeing 747 jet to accommodate him.

- 1, Kuwait: A Boeing 767 lands after a non-stop flight from Seattle, setting a world record for the longest, non-stop flight by a twin engined jet.
- 18, France: Marcel Dassault (real name: Marcel Bloch) dies at 94.
- 28, Soviet Union: Pan Am returns to the Soviet Union, using a Boeing 747 from JFK International Airport in New York.

- February 15, United States: The Beech model 2000 Starship makes its first flight.
- March 3, Wichita, Kansas: A variant of the Cessna Model 208 Caravan I , specially built for Fed Ex, makes its first flight.
- May 19, England: The British Aerospace Hawk 200 helicopter flies for the first time.
- September 13, Italy; The Piaggio P.180 Avanti business turboprop flies for the first time.

- January 8, Oklahoma: The first C-5B Galaxy plane delivered from Lockheed to the USAF.
