United Nations Day

United Nations International Days and Weeks

Flag of the United Nations

United Nations Day is celebrated internationally on 24 October for the purpose of informing the people of the world as to the aims, purposes, and achievements of the UN.

It commemorates the coming into being of the United Nations Organisation on that day in 1945 when the UN Charter was ratified by all permanent members of the security council and more than half of the signatories.

United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt devised the name "United Nations". It was first first used in the "Declaration by United Nations" of January 1, 1942, during the Second World War, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers.

The day is celebrated very generally in the United States and most countries which are members of the United Nations. The day is part of the United Nations Week, October 20-26.

United Nations Day is an official flag day in Sweden.
