USS Alligator

Four vessels have been called USS Alligator. The first two were gunboats. Gunboat #166 was built in 1809 and named USS Alligator in 1812. It was sold in 1815. The second gunboat was seized by the British in 1814, its second year of existence. The third USS Alligator was a ship of the line which participated in the Blockade of Africa in 1821 under the command of Robert F. Stockton. Just 20 months after having been commissioned, it was scuttled off the coast of Florida in 1822 after having struck a reef. The fourth vessel was the Navy's first submarine. Launched May 1st, 1862, it perplexed and unnerved various naval officers who found little or no use for the strange craft. While under tow, it sank in a storm on April 2nd, 1863.
