The Man with the Red Tattoo

The Man with the Red Tattoo, first published in 2002, was the eighth novel by Raymond Benson featuring Ian Fleming's secret agent, James Bond (including film novelizations). Carrying the Ian Fleming Publications copyright, it was first published in the United Kingdom by Hodder & Stoughton and in the United States by Putnam.

Not counting Benson's novelization of Die Another Day which was published later in the year, this was his final James Bond novel. Although he was planning to write a collection of Bond short stories, Benson abruptly announced in early 2003 that he was retiring from writing Bond novels. No replacement was named until 2004 when Ian Fleming Publications announced that a new series of novels featuring Bond as a teenager would begin in 2005, written by Charlie Higson (see SilverFin). As a result, The Man with the Red Tattoo is expected to be the final original novel featuring the adult 007 for the foreseeable future. Not counting novelizations and short story collections, it was the 33rd original James Bond novel since Ian Fleming introduced the character nearly 50 years earlier.
