The Flight of the Phoenix

The Flight of the Phoenix is the name of a 1964 novel by Elleston Trevor, a 1965 movie, and its 2004 remake (as Flight of the Phoenix). The overall plot involves the crash of a plane (a C-82 Packet in the 1965 version, a C-119 Flying Boxcar in the remake) in the middle of a desert and the survivors attempting to make a flyable plane from the wreckage to escape.

In the 1965 version, the plane crashed in a sandstorm in the Sahara desert and in the 2004 version, it crashes in the Gobi.

The 1965 version starred James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Peter Finch, Ernest Borgnine, Hardy Krüger , George Kennedy, Dan Duryea and Ian Bannen (nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar) and was directed by Robert Aldrich. The 2004 version starred Dennis Quaid, Giovanni Ribisi, Tyrese, Miranda Otto and Hugh Laurie and was directed by John Moore .

Stunt pilot Paul Mantz was killed during the filming of the 1965 movie.
