Tao-Klarjeti was a Georgian Kingdom (now territory of Turkey). In the 2nd-3rd millenniums BC territory of Tao-Klarjeti was a part of the oldest Georgian Kingdom of Diaokhi. In the 8th-9th centuries AD, southern borders of Georgia extended to the river Araks. In the 9th century, during the rule of the distinguished political figures: founder of the Georgian Royal dynasty of Bagrationi Ashot I the Great (809-826), Bagrat I Kurapalate (died in 876) and David I Kurapalate (876-881), Tao-Klarjeti was a large and powerful Principality, whose borders reached Lake Van and the town of Erzink (Erzincan).
