Suleiman Pasha, a.k.a. Colonel Sève, was a Frenchman who converted to Islam. He was recruited by the Ottoman Empire to build the Turkish army by the European model.
He was the chief commander of Turkish military operations in the Balkan Peninsula during the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-78. His incompetent command is considered one of the main reasons for the Turkish defeat. After that war he was sent to exile by Turkish authorities.
