South Lake Tahoe, California

South Lake Tahoe is a city located in El Dorado County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 23,609.

The east end of the city, on the California-Nevada border, is mainly geared towards tourism, with T-shirt shops, restaurants, hotels, Heavenly ski resort, and the casinos just across the border. The city extends about 5 miles west-southwest along highway 50, also known as Lake Tahoe Blvd. The western end of town is mainly residential, and clusters around "The Y" - the Y-shaped intersection of highways 50 and 89.

Geography

South Lake Tahoe is located at 38°55'45" North, 119°59'4" West (38.929237, -119.984347). As its name suggests it is located on the southern shore of Lake Tahoe, close to the Nevada border and the town of Stateline, Nevada.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 42.7 km² (16.5 mi²). 26.1 km² (10.1 mi²) of it is land and 16.7 km² (6.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 39.03% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 23,609 people, 9,410 households, and 5,391 families residing in the city. The population density is 906.1/km² (2,347.5/mi²). There are 14,005 housing units at an average density of 537.5/km² (1,392.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.73% White, 0.75% Black or African American, 0.97% Native American, 6.01% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 12.48% from other races, and 3.90% from two or more races. 26.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,410 households out of which 30.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.3% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.7% are non-families. 29.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 107.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $34,707, and the median income for a family is $40,572. Males have a median income of $26,352 versus $22,280 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,452. 12.5% of the population and 9.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
