Rasayana is the Sanskrit word for "chemistry". Literal meaning is 'Ocean of Wisdom'. Chemistry is often called "Rasayan Shastra" in Sanskrit, Marathi, Hindi and other languages related to Sanskrit. Chemistry in Ancient India was much less developed than today. Examples may be found in the paints used in the "Ajantha and Elora Caves" in Maharashtra, Steel of "Vishnustambha" and processed wood sample in Kondivade caves near Rajmachi fort in Maharashtra.
