Polk County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 16,050. Its county seat is Benton6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,146 km² (442 mi²). 1,127 km² (435 mi²) of it is land and 19 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.65% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,050 people, 6,448 households, and 4,752 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (37/mi²). There are 7,369 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.35% White, 0.14% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,448 households out of which 29.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.30% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 23.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.60% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 26.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,643, and the median income for a family is $36,370. Males have a median income of $27,703 versus $21,010 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,025. 13.00% of the population and 9.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.80% of those under the age of 18 and 18.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
