Plymouth, Indiana

Plymouth is a city located in Marshall County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,840. The city is the county seat of Marshall County. Plymouth was the site of the first retail outlet of defunct U.S. retailer Montgomery Ward in 1926.

Plymouth is located at 41°20'38" North, 86°18'45" West (41.343894, -86.312544)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.1 km² (7.0 mi²). 18.0 km² (7.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.14% is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,840 people, 3,838 households, and 2,406 families residing in the city. The population density is 545.9/km² (1,414.0/mi²). There are 4,100 housing units at an average density of 227.4/km² (589.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 80.80% White, 0.63% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 6.19% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 14.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,838 households out of which 31.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% are married couples living together, 12.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 12.4% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $34,505, and the median income for a family is $41,447. Males have a median income of $30,444 versus $21,293 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,417. 13.1% of the population and 10.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.9% of those under the age of 18 and 9.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
