Cuisine

Orangeburg is home to the famous collection of Duke's Barbecue restaurants. While all--and there are at least four--boast the delicious, tender barbecue and sweet, mustard-based sauce for which Duke's is known, it is the Whitman Street incarnation, with its golden hushpuppies and unlimited, extra-sweet tea, that is the true barbecue king. If you pass by Orangeburg on Interstate 26 near lunchtime, take the Hwy 301 exit and ask a local where to find it. (Like all good barbecue restaurants, Duke's is only open on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.)
