Ogdensburg, New York

Ogdensburg is a city located in St. Lawrence County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,364.

The City of Ogdensburg is on south bank of the St. Lawrence River.

The Port of Ogdensburg is the only U.S. port on the St. Lawrence Seaway. Ogdensburg International Airport is located south of the city. The Ogdensburg-Prescott Interantional Bridge, northeast of the city, links the United States and Canada

History

The earliest European settlement was a mission built in 1749 near the mouth of the Oswegatchie River. Later Fort La Presentation was built at the site of a native village. The community developed around this early settlement. The City of Ogdensburg was incorporated in 1868.

It was the site of the 1940 signing of the Ogdensburg Agreement between Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King and US President Roosevelt.

Geography

Ogdensburg is located on the Saint Lawrence River at 44°42'2" North, 75°28'52" West (44.700547, -75.481209). It is on the international border and lies opposite Prescott, Ontario, Canada.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.1 km² (8.2 mi²). 13.1 km² (5.1 mi²) of it is land and 8.0 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 37.87% water.

The Oswegatchie River joins the St. Lawrence River at Ogdensburg.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,364 people, 4,181 households, and 2,583 families residing in the city. The population density is 941.6/km² (2,440.0/mi²). There are 4,531 housing units at an average density of 345.1/km² (894.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 85.05% White, 9.92% African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.81% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 6.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,181 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.5% are married couples living together, 15.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% are non-families. 32.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.3% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 35.3% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 127.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 134.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $27,954, and the median income for a family is $36,236. Males have a median income of $32,358 versus $21,485 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,650. 18.3% of the population and 14.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.3% of those under the age of 18 and 13.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
