Nurse practitioner

A nurse practitioner is an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) who manages the care of patients in various settings depending on her/his education. For example, pediatric nurse practitioners manage the care of children; geriatric nurse practitioners manage the care of the elderly; family nurse practitioners manage both pediatric and adult patients; and acute care nurse practitioners manage the care of acutely or chronically ill patients who may or may not be in the hospital. Nurse practitioners provide both primary care services as well as specialty services. They diagnose problems, prescribe medications, provide education to patients and families, and assist the patient to maintain good health or improve their health. Most nurse practitioners possess a Masters' Degree or higher in Nursing, and may also sit for additional certification examinations.
