Munich U-Bahn
The History of the Munich U-Bahn goes back to the early 1960s when the city was searching for a way to cut down on traffic congestion in the central parts of the city. It was decided in 1964 to sink the tram routes within the central area into cut & cover subways. In 1966 Munich was awarded the 1972 Olympic Games. It was very quickly realised that the previous plans for a subway tramway system would not be sufficient to carry the heavy loads expected during the Olympic Games. A new plan for an Underground Railway System was produced, the first section opening on 6 October 1971.
