Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 45,408 people, 13,766 households, and 11,384 families residing in the city. The population density is 726.6/km² (1,881.9/mi²). There are 17,723 housing units at an average density of 283.6/km² (734.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 77.63% White, 0.37% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 18.64% from other races, and 2.34% from two or more races. 81.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,766 households out of which 43.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.8% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.3% are non-families. 15.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.29 and the average family size is 3.68.

In the city the population is spread out with 32.1% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,647, and the median income for a family is $33,465. Males have a median income of $25,710 versus $20,718 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,796. 26.8% of the population and 22.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.4% of those under the age of 18 and 15.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
