Milan Metro
The subway system of Milan, Italy is called Metrò; Metropolitana in Italian.

History
Proposals for a subway system in Milano were made as early as 1848, for a horse-drawn tramway. Other projects were drawn up in 1914 and 1925. In 1938 planning actually proceeded for actual construction of a system of 7 lines, but this, too halted after the start of World War II. Construction finally began in 1957.
The first Line (Red) of Subway was opened in Milano in the 1964 after 7 years of work, from Lotto to Sesto Marelli(21 stations). In 1969 the second Line (dark green) from Caiazzo to Cascina Gobba (7 stations) was opened. In the mid 1960s and 1970s the network of 2 lines was completed, and both lines have 2 different spurs. Line 1 has a west branch from Pagano Station, and Line 2 has an east branch from Cascina Gobba to Gessate, running far away in the metropolitan area for 10 stations.
In 1990 the third Line (yellow) was opened, with 5 stations. The other 9 stations on Line 3 opened to the southeast in 1991, and to northwest to Maciacchini Stations in 2004. A fourth line (dark blue) was opened in 1997, the Passante Ferroviario: a line of 11 km , with 8 km underground with 9 stations.
Finally, in 1999 a shuttle line based on a V.A.L. system opened between Cascina Gobba station and the San Raffaele Hospital, called Metrò San Raffaele (light green) with 2 stations.

Currently expansion of the network under construction:
- Line 1 Red from Molino Dorino to Rho Fiera/T.A.V; 2.2 Km with intermediate station at Pero. (will open in spring 2006)
- Line 1 Red from Sesto 1° Maggio to Monza Bettola; 2.0 Km with intermediate station at Sesto Restellone. (2008)
- Line 2 Green from Famagosta to Forum di Assago; 4.7 Km with intermediate station at Milanofiori Nord/Rozzano. (2007)
- Line 2 Green from Famagost to Abbiategrasso; 1.4 Km. (will open in December 2004)
- Line 2 Green will be opened a new stationcalled Malagra between Cascina Burrona and Cernusco S/N stations.
- Line 3 Yellow from Maciacchini to Comasina; 4.0 Km with intermediate stations at Dergano - Affori Centro - Affori FNM. (2008)
- Line 4 Blu from Dateo to Porta Vittoria; 1.0 Km. (December 2004)

Technique
The Milan Metro uses on two of its lines a overhead line for the current and on one line a special system with two third rails. The gauge width is 1435 mm. (Please complete this chapter!)
Expansion
Lines under construction
There are two additional lines being planned, Line 5 and Line 6.
- Line 5 (purple) will be run from Garibaldi station (links with Line 2-4) north to Monza city centre. The first part of the Line will be built from late spring 2005, from Garibladi to Bignami station, with intermediate stations at Isola, Zara, Marche, Istria, Cà Granda, Bicocca Università II°, Bignami.
The second part of Line 5 will have stations at Sesto Parco Nord, Cinisello Valtellina, Monza Philips, Monza Monza Bettola, Monza FS, Monza Arengario, Monza Villa Reale, Monza San Gerardo, Monza Virgilio.
- Line 6 will run from the western suburb of Lorenteggio to the eastern side of the city to Linate Airport.
Long term plana
- Line 1 Red will be extended from Bisceglie to Baggio neighborhood; 3 km with intermediate station at Valsesia.
- Line 2 Green will be extended from Cologno Nord to Vimercate Centro; 7 km with 4 or 5 stations.
- Line 3 Yellow will be extended south-east from San Donato Milanese to Paullo; 6 Km with intermediate stations in the city of San Donato, Peschiera Borromeo and Mediglia.
- The North-West branch of Line 1 Red, from Rho Fiera/T.A.V. to Pagano should be tranformed in an indipendent Line 7, and then extended South.
Ferrovie Nord Milano
This old railway network is the second busiest railway company of Italy. The city terminal for all the 6 Lines is in the Milano city centre, at Cadorna Station, with link to Line 1 and 2 of the Subway.

- totally more than 250 Km and 134 Stations
The service runs for 19 hours every day of the year. The FNM has six stations in the city of Milan:
- Cadorna
- Domodossola Fiera Polo Urbano
- Bovisa Nord
- Quarto Oggiaro
- Affori FNM
- Bruzzano
In the city the service run underground or at street level with priority at crossings, with a frequency similar to the subway: 3 minutes.
After December 2004 the F.N.M. lines will be incorporated in the new Suburban Railway Service "S".
Suburban railways and urban railway service
From December 2004 will opened the new Railway service "S". Similar to French R.E.R. and German S-Bhan. There will be 10 Lines that will run from Milano to the Metropolitan Area:
- S1 Sarono - Milano - Lodi - 50 km
- S2 Mariano Comense - Milano - Pavia - 62 km
- S3 Saronno - Milano Cadorna - 21 km
- S4 Camnago - Milano Cadorna - 21 km
- S5 Gallarate - Milano - Pioltello - 51 km
- S6 Magenta - Milano - Treviglio - 72 km
- S7 Milano Garibaldi - Besana Brianza (will opened in the 2006)
- S8 Milano Garibladi - Carnate (will opened in the 2006)
- S9 Camnago - Milano San Cristoforo - Abbiategrasso - 54 km
- S10 Milano Bovisa - Milano Porta Vittoria - 7.2 km

In the 2008 the "S" network will be completed and extended and the 10 Lines will be:

In the city centre the "S" railways will run underground using the tunnel system of the Passante Ferroviario (Line 4 Dark Blue) and the recently renovated lines of Ferrovie Nord Milano. The service will be called "Metro S" with 4 Lines:
- MS1 - Passante from Rho Fiera/T.A.V. to the 2 city terminals: east branch Pioltello and south branch Rogoredo; 13 Stations.
- MS2 - Nord from Milano Cadorna to the 2 city terminals: northwest branch Quarto Oggiaro and northeast branch Bruzzano; 6 Stations.
- MS3 - Brianza from Milano Garibaldi to Milano Greco: 2 Stations.
- MS4 - Cintura from Milano Greco to Milano Lambrate: 2 Stations.
