Juan José Viamonte

(Redirected from Juan Jose Viamonte)

Juan José Viamonte González (February 9, 1774 - March 31, 1843) was an Argentine general in the early 19th century.

He was born in Buenos Aires and entered the army in his youth. He fought in many battles and apparently advanced steadily. In the Battle of Huaqui , which the revolutionary forces lost, he was one of the commanding officers, but he survived an ensuing military tribunal unscathed. He interimistically served for two days as Supreme Director in place of Ignacio Álvarez Thomas and three times as the governor of the province of Buenos Aires: in 1821 and 1829 for a few months; only after 1832 did he remain in office for a longer period of time. When he had to resign, he emigrated to Montevideo, where he died. In 1881, his remains were transferred back to Buenos Aires.
