Jacques Barrot

Jacques Barrot (born February 3, 1937 in Yssingeaux , Haute-Loire, France ), is France's current European Commissioner. Barrot had earlier held various ministerial positions in France.

In France, he is a member of the political party UMP (right).

Barrot has been a European Commissioner since January 2000, serving as Commissioner for Regional Policy in the Prodi Commission before being selected as a Vice-President and Commissioner for Transport in the Barroso Commission.

On November 18 2004, Nigel Farage of the UK Independence Party told the European Parliament that Barrot had been convicted of fraud in 2000, for embezzling FRF 25m (US$ 3.8m, £2 million) from government funds and diverting it into the funds of his party. For this, he had received an 8 month suspended prison sentence; however, a subsequent amnesty law, voted by the right-wing majority, suppressed this conviction.
