Huntington, Indiana

Huntington is a city located in Huntington County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 17,450. The city is the county seat of Huntington County.

Geography

Huntington is located at 40°52'55" North, 85°29'44" West (40.882083, -85.495595)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.8 km² (8.4 mi²). 21.6 km² (8.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.07% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,450 people, 6,717 households, and 4,419 families residing in the city. The population density is 806.9/km² (2,091.0/mi²). There are 7,262 housing units at an average density of 335.8/km² (870.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.83% White, 0.21% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,717 households out of which 33.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% are non-families. 29.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 12.9% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,600, and the median income for a family is $43,454. Males have a median income of $31,830 versus $20,921 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,242. 8.1% of the population and 5.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.2% of those under the age of 18 and 7.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
