Jayapura

Jayapura City (Kota Jayapura) is the capital of Papua province, Indonesia, on the island of New Guinea. From 1910 to 1962 it was known as Hollandia and was the capital of a district of the same name in the northeast of West New Guinea. In 1945 the Dutch made it the capital of Netherlands New Guinea. After the handing over of Netherlands New Guinea to the UN it became Kota Baru from October 1, 1962 and then, when Indonesia took over control over the territory on May 1, 1963; Sukarnopura till the end of 1968; before acquiring its present name.

Sited on Teluk Yos Sudarso (Humboldt Bay) the area was host to a large naval base during World War II. Occupied by the Japanese in April 1942 during World War II, it was liberated by U.S. forces on 22 April 1944, and served as General Douglas MacArthur's headquarters till the conquest of the Philippines in March 1945.

Population (2002) approximately 200,000.

Jayapura, a village in Sri Lanka in the Thampalagamuwa divisional secretary's division of Trincomalee district. The village of Jayapura had a population of 204 families in 1980.
