Hightstown, New Jersey

Hightstown is a borough located in Mercer County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 5,216.

Geography

Hightstown is located at 40°16'11" North, 74°31'27" West (40.269759, -74.524161)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.60% water.

Hightstown is an independent municipality located entirely within the boundaries of East Windsor Township.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,216 people, 2,001 households, and 1,300 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,637.3/km² (4,251.9/mi²). There are 2,081 housing units at an average density of 653.2/km² (1,696.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 76.53% White, 8.51% African American, 0.36% Native American, 2.28% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 9.64% from other races, and 2.59% from two or more races. 20.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,001 households out of which 30.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% are non-families. 27.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the borough the population is spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 36.8% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 103.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.2 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $64,299, and the median income for a family is $72,092. Males have a median income of $46,375 versus $35,428 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $28,605. 7.3% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.1% of those under the age of 18 and 4.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
