Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,544 km² (596 mi²). 1,497 km² (578 mi²) of it is land and 48 km² (18 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.09% water.

There are 12,807 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.91% White, 3.69% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 10,426 households out of which 29.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.60% are non-families. 25.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
