HMS Nautilus

Ten vessels of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Nautilus, after the Greek word for a sailor.

  • The first Nautilus was a 16-gun sloop launched in 1762.
  • The second Nautilus was a 16-gun sloop launched in 1784 and wrecked in 1799.
  • The third Nautilus was an 18-gun sloop launched in 1804 and wrecked in 1807.
  • The fourth Nautilus was a 14-gun brig-sloop built c. 1794 and captured in 1815 by USS Peacock.
  • The fifth Nautilus was a 14-gun brig-sloop launched in 1806 and wrecked in 1834.
  • The sixth Nautilus was an 18-gun brig-sloop, launched in 1807 and broken up in 1823.
  • The seventh Nautilus was a 10-gun brig-sloop, launched in 1830 and broken up in 1878.
  • The eighth Nautilus was an 8-gun training brig, launched in 1879 and sold in 1905.
  • The ninth Nautilus, launched in 1910, was a Beagle-class destroyer. In World War I she served in the Dardanelles campaign. She was sold in 1920.
  • The tenth Nautilus , launched in 1914, was a submarine, renamed N1 in 1918 and sold in 1922.
