Guinea-Bissau Civil War

The Guinea-Bissau Civil War was triggered by a coup led by Former Brigadier General Ansumane Mané against the Guinea-Bissau government and President João Bernardo Vieira (who had himself come to power through a military coup) on June 7 1998. The coup failed and Senegal and Guinea sent troops to support the government. A cease-fire was agreed upon on July 26 1998 but sporadic outbreaks of fighting continued until November 2 1998 when a peace treaty was signed. There are no reliable casualty figures for the civil war but it was reported that as many as 300,000 people fled the Guinea-Bissau capital Bissau to escape the fighting.

In 1999 fighting broke out again and President Vieira was removed from office. Elections to elect a new President took place in 2000.
