Greek lexicon

This is a lexicon (word list) of some Greek words, both ancient and modern.

The (modern) Greek alphabet is (the transcription used follows in brackets): Αα (Aa), Ββ (Bb), Γγ (Gg), Δδ (Dd), Εε (Ee), Ζζ (Zz), Ηη (Êê), Θθ(Th th), Ιι (Ii), Κκ (Kk), Λλ (Ll), Μμ(Mm), Νν(Nn), Ξξ (Xx), Οο(Oo), Ππ (Pp), Ρρ (Rr), Σσς (Ss), Ττ (Tt), Υυ (Uu), Φφ (Ph ph), Χχ (Kh kh), Ψψ (Ps ps) Ωω (Ôô)

Hh also occurs in the transcriptions, but as it is not considered a separate letter (being 'rough breathing' instead), entries beginning with Hh are found under their second letter.

Greek Words with Modern Derivatives

This is a list of some older Greek words that have prominent derivatives in English and other modern languages.

Note that, in general, a Greek Υυ (Uu) became a Yy in English and other modern derivates, with the associated 'y' sound, Κκ (Kk) often became Cc, and Χχ (Kh kh) became Ch ch.

two (2) = dio (dhio, the-o)
three (3) = tria (tree-a)
four (4) = tessera
five (5) = pede [in greek though d in the case of all five's is spelled as nt, here it is put as d to make it easier for english readers]

eight (8) = okto, oxto [x pronounced as h on hot]
nine (9) = ennea, ennia

twelve (12) = dodeka (tho-the-ka)
thirteen (13) = dekatria (dheka+tree-a)
fourteen (14) = dekatessera (dheka+tessera)
*numbers continue likewise by adding the "dheka" to the numbers that continue e.g. 10+8=18 then deka+okto=dekaokto
twenty (20) = ikosi
thirty (30) = triada
fourty (40) = sarada
fifty (50) = penida
sixty (60) = exida [x pronounced as x in six]
seventy (70) = evdomida
eighty (80) = ogdoda
ninety (90) = enenida
*the first asterisk rule continues likewise; thus : 70+4 = 74 then evdomida + tessera = evdomidatessera

three hundreds (300) = triakosia

eight hundreds (800) = oktakosia
nine hundreds (900) = enniakosia
*the rule doesnt change, so if you want to say that you have 234 euros u do the following : 200+30+4 = 234 then diakosia+triada+tessera = diakosiatriadatessera!
one thousand (1000) = xilia [x pronounced as h on hat]
two thousands (2000) = dio xiliades
