Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra

The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, or Göteborgs symfoniker, is an orchestra based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Founded in 1905, it was granted the title of "Swedish National Orchestra" in 1987. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra performs att the Gothenburg Concert Hall, well renowned for its superior acoustic qualities.

  • 1906-1922: Wilhelm Stenhammar
  • 1922-1939: Tor Mann
  • 1941-1953: Issaï Dobrowen
  • 1953-1960: Dean Dixon
  • 1961-1967: None; Alberto Erede and Othmar Maga were regular guest conductors
  • 1967-1973: Sergiu Comissiona (with Norman Del Mar as permanent guest conductor, 1968-1973)
  • 1974-1976: Sixten Ehrling
  • 1976-1979: Charles Dutoit
  • 1982-2004: Neeme Järvi

Swiss conductor Mario Venzago is scheduled to assume the post in 2004.
