Fear of the Dark was the final 1990s album by the heavy metal band Iron Maiden that featured Bruce Dickinson as lead vocalist. Dickinson felt the band had run its course and then recorded solo albums. Dickinson was succeeded by Blaze Bayley, formerly of Wolfsbane for two studio albums until Dickinson returned to Iron Maiden in 2000 for the release of the Brave New World album.

The band sought a more "thrash" approach in some of the songs on this album, with hopes to gain more popularity in the USA.

The ending and title track of the album was apparently inspired by Bruce's chilhood fear.
