Fayetteville is a city located in Lincoln County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,994. It is the county seat of Lincoln County.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,994 people, 3,054 households, and 1,804 families residing in the city. The population density is 367.9/km² (952.2/mi²). There are 3,370 housing units at an average density of 177.3/km² (458.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 71.39% White, 26.22% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 0.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,054 households out of which 24.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.0% are married couples living together, 18.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.9% are non-families. 37.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.14 and the average family size is 2.81.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 25.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 76.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 70.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $23,830, and the median income for a family is $32,477. Males have a median income of $26,957 versus $22,382 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,391. 20.8% of the population and 15.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.8% of those under the age of 18 and 20.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
