F.I.S.T.

F.I.S.T. is a 1978 movie directed by Norman Jewison and starring Sylvester Stallone. In this film, Stallone plays a trucker that becomes involved in the labor union leadership, and finds that he must sacrifice his principals as he moves up through the union. It is loosely based on union leader Jimmy Hoffa.

Most of the filming was done in Dubuque, Iowa. One of the reasons Dubuque was chosen was because the older sections of Dubuque looked more like Cleveland of the 1930s than Cleveland did. Some locations used in filming included Sacred Heart Church, the Fourth Street Elevator, and Dubuque Star Brewery.

The main reason for this appearance was the lack of television antennas on the homes. As television didn't become popular until after World War II the antennas would have been out of place in the movie. The unique geography of Dubuque caused problems with over-the-air reception of television signals. Because of the large bluffs, signals had problems reaching homes in the low lying areas, so a cable system was developed in the mid-1950s.
