The European Defence Community (EDC) was a treaty signed in May 1952 by France, Germany, Italy and the Benelux countries in response to the American call for the rearmament of West Germany. However, because of the failure to obtain a majority in the French Parliament, the EDC was never ratified and the initiative collapsed in August 1954.
