Edmund Moubray Lyons

Edmund Moubray Lyons was the second son of Rear Admiral Sir Edmund Lyons (later 1st Lord Lyons) and Augusta Louisa (née Rogers). He was born October 27 1819 and died on the June 23 1855 at Therapia in the Crimea.

Edmund entered the Royal Naval College on 1829-07-10 . The following is a time line of keys events in Edmund Moubray Lyons' Naval career:

  • 1838 - Passes examination
  • 1841 - Present at the capture of Bocca, Tigns and subsequent operations against Canton. Promoted to Lieutenant

- Obtains first commission (June 11) as is appointed as Additional to the HOWE 120

  • 1842 - Appointed to the RODNEY 92, Captain Robert Maunsell, March 1
  • 1844 - Appointed as Additional to the QUEEN 110, bearing the flag of Sir Edward Owen, January 11

- Appointed to the AIGLE 24, Captain Lord Clarence Edward Paget, April 15

  • 1845 - Appointed to the TYNE 26, Captain William Nugent Glascock, June 19
  • 1846 - Appointed as First to the SIREN 16, Captain Harry Edmund Edgell, April 10

- Commands

He died while in command of HMS Miranda, mortally wounded while engaging the batteries of Sevastopol. The officers and crew of the Miranda paid for a memorial to him in St Paul's Cathedral, London.

He appears as a character in the book "The Valiant Sailors" by V.A. Stuart.
