Eastern Michigan University is located in Ypsilanti, Michigan. In the past, EMU was noted for its large education program. It was founded in 1849 as the Michigan State Normal School and became the Michigan State Normal College in 1899, then Eastern Michigan College in 1956, and finally Eastern Michigan University in 1959.
John Fallon III, Ph.D. was selected as the 21st president of EMU and he will replace Willis this summer around the 15th of July when he moves to Ypsilanti and into the University House. Fallon is currently (as of April 2005) the president of SUNY-Potsdam. He was selected in March after he and Beverley Pitts both visited the Ypsilanti university. Pitts is the provost of Ball State University and will become the president of the University of Indianapolis this summer.
The current president is Craig Dean Willis. He previously served as the president of Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. Upon retiring this past summer, Willis became the interim president at EMU following the untimely departure of Samuel Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick resigned after it was discovered that the University House, which includes the president's official residence, cost nearly $6 million to build when only $3 million was originally estimated and allocated for the building. It is located on Hewitt Road near the university's athletic facilities and Convocation Center.
The previous president, Bill Shelton, served from 1989 to 2000 and was greeted by more than 200 faculty on his first day on the job. Shelton sought to create a "Learning University" wherein "learning permeates everything."
The Eastern Michigan University College of Education is one of the nation's finest colleges of education and produces more classroom teachers than any other school.
Facts related to EMU
- Legendary cartoonist Winsor McCay attended business classes at EMU when it was called the Michigan State Normal College.
- Noted as "the most elaborate pop hoax in history," the "Paul Is Dead" myth has generated more rumors and speculation for the Beatles than for any other group. It all started on Sunday, Oct 12, 1969, Russ Gibb, working on WKNR-FM heard from an Eastern Michigan University student about a series of clues that seemed to point to Paul's death. The story took on a life of its own, both on Keener and WKNR-FM and Russ received credit for making it a national story.
Some campus visitors
Events at the Ypsilanti campus — down the street from the University of Michigan — have hosted Michael Moore, Cornel West, ex-President Bill Clinton, comedian Bill Maher, and poet Maya Angelou. In 2005, EMU plans to host Sister Helen Prejean and Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie on campus.
