Eagle Pass, Texas

Eagle Pass is a city located in Maverick County, Texas, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 22,413. It is the county seat of Maverick County.

Eagle Pass borders the city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico to the south across the Rio Grande river.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.2 km² (7.4 mi²). 19.2 km² (7.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.40% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,413 people, 6,925 households, and 5,588 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,169.4/km² (3,030.3/mi²). There are 7,613 housing units at an average density of 397.2/km² (1,029.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 72.73% White, 0.27% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 22.71% from other races, and 3.13% from two or more races. 94.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,925 households out of which 43.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 18.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.3% are non-families. 17.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.22 and the average family size is 3.69.

In the city the population is spread out with 32.7% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $23,623, and the median income for a family is $27,140. Males have a median income of $26,350 versus $17,346 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,414. 29.0% of the population and 26.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 34.0% of those under the age of 18 and 39.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
