E-Sword

e-Sword is a free Study Bible software program for Windows and Pocket PC computers. Some members of the e-Sword community have apparently managed to run e-Sword on Linux using the WINE application although the official e-Sword web site makes no statement regarding Linux compatibility.

Like other Bible software, e-Sword can be used for word or phrase searches and comparison of different readings in various Bible translations plus the original Greek and Hebrew texts. Tooltips can be used to view Strong's numbers and cross-references. Dictionaries, commentaries, devotionals, maps, and timelines are available as aids for understanding the Bible text. Users of e-Sword can create and store their own notes and topics for later use. The program can also read materials in STEP format. A basic download of e-Sword provides the King James Version of the Bible with Strong's Concordance. Resources are available in many different languages, although English language modules are by far the most common.

A highly active e-Sword user community exists, through which numerous 'unofficial' user modules have been created. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the quality and popularity of such user-contributed modules varies enormously. In general, the most useful and most popular "add-on" modules are located at the official e-Sword web page. Some of the more notable of these are:

Bibles:

Commentaries:

  • Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible
  • Robertson's Word Pictures in the New Testament
  • Vincent's Word Studies
  • Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Dictionaries:

Despite the apparent similarity in name, e-Sword is unrelated to the Bible software programs arising from The Sword Project by the Crosswire Bible society. Consequently, modules produced by The Sword Project are not compatible with e-Sword and vice versa. e-Sword is frequently (and incorrectly) written as "eSword".

The e-Sword application began life in January 2000. The latest version for Windows is 7.6.1. For Pocket PC's, the latest version is 2.5.2.
