Dunthorpe, a highly affluent suburb of Portland, Oregon, is located south of the city, adjoining the Willamette River, Lewis & Clark College and Lake Oswego. Dunthorpe as a community was historicly anchored by Riverdale Gradeschool. In the late 1990's, the Oregon legislature decreed that all school districts should have both primary and secondary schools, and expected smaller school districts like Riverdale to merge. With but one gradeschool in its portfolio, Riverdale was expected to merge with the almost as affluent Lake Oswego school district to the south. Riverdale chose to keep its independence. While an old gradeschool was purchased and renovated, high school students were bussed to a leased school in Oregon City. Riverdale High School has a new, permanent home that includes a highly regarded computer lab featuring Linux.
