Film bio

Dr. No is a brillant scientist who is half German and half Chinese. He specialized in atomic energy at the cost of losing both of his hands, which were replaced with metal hooks.

He offered his skills and expertise to the Americans but was rejected. To get revenge, No joined the villainous organization S.P.E.C.T.R.E. where he relocated to his island in Crab Key, Jamaica.

Scheme

Dr. No, in an effort to cause trouble for the Americans, used his secret island base as a headquarters where he would sabotage U.S. missiles by removing their guidance systems and destroying them.

No was killed after a hand-to-hand fight with Bond on a descending platform. Due to Dr. No's metal hands he was unable to grip the framework of the lift and thus sank into the boiling radioactive water to his death.

Novel bio

Although the film and novel are similar in plot, the backgrounds for Julius No are almost entirely different. Born in Peking he was the son of a German Methodist missionary and a Chinese girl, but was raised by his Aunt. When older No left and went to Shanghai where he got involved with the Tongs, a Chinese crime syndicate. Later he was smuggled to New York City where he became a treasurer for a Tong in America, called "Hip-Sings". In the late 1920's a mob war broke out in New York forcing the Police to crack down on them. No was then tipped off that the Tong "Hip-Sings" was going to be raided. Due to this, No stole a million dollars in gold from the Tong and disappeared. Later the Tongs tracked him down and tortured No for the location of the gold, but when No didn't tell them, the Tongs cut off No's hands. When they were done they shot him through the heart and left him for dead. Interestly, Dr. No has a condition called dextrocardia, in which his heart is on the right side of the body, thus when the Tong's attempted to kill him, they missed and he survived.

Using his million dollars, No purchased the island of Crab Key off the coast of Jamaica where he became a guano merchant.

Scheme

Dr. No with aid from the Soviets, sabotage nearby American missile tests by jamming their signals and making them land and explode at a different target than what was planned forcing the Americans to forever redesign their missiles.

Bond doesn't actually learn No's devious plot until after infiltrating Crab Key with Quarrel, where he was captured. With the help of Honeychile Rider who also tresspassed to find exclusive shells, Bond kills Dr. No by ramming him while operating a crane.
