Clinton, Iowa

Clinton is a city located in Clinton County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 27,772. It is the county seat of Clinton County. Along with DeWitt, Iowa, it was named in honor of the seventh Governor of New York State, DeWitt Clinton.

Clinton is located at 41°50'49" North, 90°12'26" West (41.846863, -90.207330)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 99.2 km² (38.3 mi²). 92.1 km² (35.6 mi²) of it is land and 7.1 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.18% water.

Culture and Institutions

Clinton is home to Ashford University (formerly The Franciscan University and Mount St. Clare College) and Clinton Community College.

Clinton is also home to the Clinton LumberKings, a Class A minor league baseball team, affiliated with the Texas Rangers, that plays in the Midwest League. The LumberKings play their home games at Alliant Energy Field.

The Mississippi Belle II riverboat casino makes its home on Clinton's riverfront.

Clinton has many city parks, most notably Eagle Point Park.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 27,772 people, 11,427 households, and 7,358 families residing in the city. The population density is 301.5/km² (780.9/mi²). There are 12,412 housing units at an average density of 134.7/km² (349.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.80% White, 3.22% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 1.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,427 households out of which 30.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% are non-families. 30.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $34,159, and the median income for a family is $43,157. Males have a median income of $34,210 versus $20,882 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,320. 12.5% of the population and 10.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

The American Protective Association (APA) was founded in Clinton in 1887.
