Chicken, Alaska

Chicken is a census-designated place located in Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the CDP is 17.

History

Chicken was settled by gold miners in the late 1800s and in 1902 became the second city in Alaska to be incorporated. Due to the prevalance of ptarmigan in the area that name was suggested as the official name for the new city, however, the spelling could not be agreed on and Chicken was used to avoid embarrassment.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 298.9 km² (115.4 mi²). 298.9 km² (115.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics
