Chicken is a census-designated place located in Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the CDP is 17.

History

Chicken was settled by gold miners in the late 1800s and in 1902 became the second city in Alaska to be incorporated. Due to the prevalance of ptarmigan in the area that name was suggested as the official name for the new city, however, the spelling could not be agreed on and Chicken was used to avoid embarrassment.

Geography

Chicken is located at 64°4'15" North, 141°52'30" West (64.070738, -141.874894)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 298.9 km² (115.4 mi²). 298.9 km² (115.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 17 people, 6 households, and 4 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 0.1/km² (0.1/mi²). There are 21 housing units at an average density of 0.1/km² (0.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 100.00% White.

There are 6 households out of which 50.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% are married couples living together, 16.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.7% are non-families. 16.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.83 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 29.4% under the age of 18, 0.0% from 18 to 24, 35.3% from 25 to 44, 29.4% from 45 to 64, and 5.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 50.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $66,250, the per capita income for the town is $65,400. 0.0% of the population is below the poverty line.
