Camuy, Puerto Rico

Camuy, Puerto Rico, once part of Arecibo, was founded in 1807 by Petrolina Matos . The name may derive from a Taino word for what is now known as the Camuy River. It is located in the northwestern Atlantic coast, less than 10 minutes east of Hatillo on PR 2 and toll Expressway 22.

The patron saint for Camuy is "San José Obrero ", celebrated on MAY 1 .

Camuy is known for its Parque de las Cavernas del Río Camuy (Camuy River Cave Park), an impressive network of natural subterranean caves and underground riverways. The park built around the cave system features special tours of some of the caves. It is one of the most visited natural attractions in Puerto Rico.

Camuy's population is estimated at 35,200 (2000 census). The municipality is growing more slowly than neighboring Hatillo.
