Cahokia, Illinois

Cahokia is a village located in St. Clair County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a population of 16,391. The name is a reference to Cahokia.

Geography

Cahokia is located at 38°33'43" North, 90°10'22" West (38.561901, -90.172878).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 25.8 km² (10.0 mi²). 24.9 km² (9.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.71% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,391 people, 5,693 households, and 4,252 families residing in the village. The population density is 658.5/km² (1,705.8/mi²). There are 6,213 housing units at an average density of 249.6/km² (646.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 58.28% White, 38.69% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. 2.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,693 households out of which 41.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% are married couples living together, 25.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% are non-families. 20.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the village the population is spread out with 33.4% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $31,001, and the median income for a family is $35,582. Males have a median income of $31,806 versus $22,429 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,545. 24.9% of the population and 22.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.0% of those under the age of 18 and 5.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
