Burlingame is a city located in San Mateo County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 28,158.
Geography
Burlingame is located at 37°34'60" North, 122°21'49" West (37.583235, -122.363691).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.6 km² (6.0 mi²). 11.2 km² (4.3 mi²) of it is land and 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 28.19% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 28,158 people, 12,511 households, and 6,956 families residing in the city. The population density is 2,510.8/km² (6,496.2/mi²). There are 12,869 housing units at an average density of 1,147.5/km² (2,968.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 76.88% White, 1.05% African American, 0.23% Native American, 13.78% Asian, 0.48% Pacific Islander, 3.62% from other races, and 3.96% from two or more races. 10.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,511 households out of which 24.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.1% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.4% are non-families. 35.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.93.
In the city the population is spread out with 19.2% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 36.9% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $68,526, and the median income for a family is $91,309. Males have a median income of $59,148 versus $47,461 for females. The per capita income for the city is $43,565. 5.7% of the population and 3.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.8% of those under the age of 18 and 4.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
City of Trees
Burlingame is know as the 'City of Trees' due to the amount of trees within the city (18,000 public trees). Most residential property has City owned and protected trees on their public right of way. In addition the city has many parks and Eucalyptus groves that add to the overall tree numbers.
Washington Park
Washington Park with Burlingame Avenue at its eastern edge, Burlingame High School at its western edge, and the Caltrain line at its southern edge is the oldest park in Burlingame. It was originally part of the Gunst Estate, and some of the existing large trees within the park were part of this estate.
