Oophorectomy

Oophorectomy is the surgical removal of the ovaries of a female animal. In the case of non-human animals, this is also called spaying. It is a form of sterilization.

The removal of the ovaries together with the Fallopian tubes is called salpingo-oophorectomy. Oophorectomy and salpingo-oophorectomy are not common forms of birth control in humans; more usual is tubal ligation, in which the Fallopian tubes are blocked but the ovaries remain intact.

In humans, oophorectomy is most usually performed together with a hysterectomy - the removal of the uterus. Its use in a hysterectomy when there are no other health problems is somewhat controversial.

In animals, spaying involves an invasive removal of the ovaries, but rarely has major complications; the superstition that it causes weight gain is not based on fact. Spaying is especially important for certain animals that require the ovum to be released at a certain interval (called estrus or "heat"), such as cats and dogs. If the cell is not released during these animal's heat, it can cause severe medical problems that can be averted by spaying or partnering the animal with a male.

Oophorectomy is sometimes referred to as castration, but that term is most often used to mean the removal of a male animal's testicles.

Bo Derek

Bo Derek (born Mary Cathleen Collins on November 20, 1956) is an American film actress and model. She was born in Long Beach, California.

She co-starred in the 1979 Blake Edwards film 10, in which she vied with Julie Andrews for Dudley Moore's attention. Her subsequent films have not been well-received by either the public or critics. The 1981 film Tarzan, the Ape Man was a disappointment, and Bolero (1984) essentially ended any possibility of a substantial film career; those two titles earned her the dubious honor of four Golden Raspberry Awards, as well as a nomination in 2000 as the "Worst Actress of the Century".

She was married to actor John Derek from 1974 until his death in 1998. They met during filming of a movie, and subsequently, John filed for divorce from his wife, actress Linda Evans.

In September 1985, Bo Derek met with Apple Computer co-founder Steve Jobs, who tried to convert her into becoming a Mac user. Bo was a heavy-duty computer jockey at the time, though favoring the IBM PC persuasion, and she remained a PC user after the unimpressed meeting with Jobs. To this day, Bo Derek continues to be a PC user. She also campaigned for George W. Bush in 2000 and also in 2004, a very telling fact. [2] http://www.jerseygop.com/RepublicanBabes.html
