Battle of Bassorah

In 655 a Muslim force led by Caliph Ali defeated a superior force of rebel Arabs in the Battle of Bassorah (Bassorah = Basra). As of 1935 the victory is still well known amongst Muslims as "The Day of the Camel". The rebel forces were led by Telha and Zobin , both of whom fell in battle. Seventy men held in succession the bridle of the camel which Ayesha, who had espoused the rebels' cause, had sat upon, and were killed in the struggle.
