Barnstable County is a county located in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. As of 2000, the population is 222,230. Its county seat is Barnstable6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,382 km² (1,306 mi²). 1,024 km² (396 mi²) of it is land and 2,357 km² (910 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 69.71% water. Barnstable County includes -- and is mostly comprised of -- Cape Cod.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 222,230 people, 94,822 households, and 61,065 families residing in the county. The population density is 217/km² (562/mi²). There are 147,083 housing units at an average density of 144/km² (372/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.23% White, 1.79% Black or African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.11% from other races, and 1.66% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 94,822 households out of which 24.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.20% are married couples living together, 9.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.60% are non-families. 29.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.82.

In the county the population is spread out with 20.40% under the age of 18, 5.20% from 18 to 24, 25.00% from 25 to 44, 26.20% from 45 to 64, and 23.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 89.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $45,933, and the median income for a family is $54,728. Males have a median income of $41,033 versus $30,079 for females. The per capita income for the county is $25,318. 6.90% of the population and 4.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.60% of those under the age of 18 and 5.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
