The BMW E38 automobile platform was the basis for the 1995 through 2001 7-series of automobiles. It replaced the BMW E32 in 1995 and was replaced by the BMW E66 for 2002.

They underwent many upgrades, both on the surface, under the hood and in the interior. Starting in 1997, all models had the 5-speed steptronic automatic gearbox. Onboard TV and satellite navigation also became optional in 1997.
