Apalachin, New York

Apalachin is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in Tioga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 1,126. It is named after the Apalachin Creek. Apalachin means in the native language From where the messenger returned.

Appalachin is in the southeast part of the Town of Owego and is adjacent to the Southern Tier Expressway (New York 17).

Geography

Apalachin is located at 42°4'28" North, 76°9'23" West (42.074407, -76.156308)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the region has a total area of 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²). 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

The community is on the south side of the Susquehanna River.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,126 people, 442 households, and 307 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 293.8/km² (763.1/mi²). There are 474 housing units at an average density of 123.7/km² (321.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 96.54% White, 0.98% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 0.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 442 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% are non-families. 24.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the community the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.4 males.

The median income for a household in the hamlet is $38,636, and the median income for a family is $42,647. Males have a median income of $21,902 versus $25,357 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $14,927. 11.2% of the population and 9.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.4% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Facts about Apalachin

An early resident was Benjamin F. Tracy, father of the modern navy.

In 1957 various police agencies discovered and interrupted the Apalachin Conference , organized by mafioso Vito_Genovese.
