American Airlines Flight 587

American Airlines Flight 587 was a flight route that flew from John F. Kennedy International Airport in Jamaica, Queens, New York, New York, to Las Americas International Airport in Punta Caucedo , Dominican Republic, near Santo Domingo.

On November 12 2001, at 9:17 A.M. local time, Flight 587 crashed into the Belle Harbor neighborhood of Queens, New York. In total, the crash caused 265 deaths. The plane carried 241 passengers and nine crew members plus five unticketed infants sitting on parents' laps. Five people on the ground were also killed.

The Airbus A-300 jet, which left John F. Kennedy Airport bound for Las Americas Airport, crashed shortly after takeoff, with the impact setting several houses ablaze and killing a number of people on the ground.

It was later confirmed that this was not another terrorist attack. (See September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks).

The cause of the crash is thought to be the overuse of the rudder to counter wake turbulence [1].

Flight 587 no longer exists. The flight route designation of flights between Kennedy Airport and Las Americas Airport now are under Flight 619, Flight 635, and Flight 789.
