Amarah

Amarah (sometimes written al-'Amarah), is a city in southeastern Iraq, located next to the Tigris River waterway south of Baghdad, at . Predominately Shiite, it had a population of about 340,000 as of 2002. It is the administrative capital of the Maysan province.

History

In 1915 Amarah was captured by the British. Before 1958, Amarah was known for its feudal system. Before and during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the city was noted as a center of resistance to Saddam Hussein.
